2025 SJTU Undergraduate Engineering Cluster Program


In English for International Students


Founded in 1896, Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) is one of the internationally recognized, top-tier research universities in China, with strong commitment to nurturing future leaders with innovative drives and global visions. The Engineering Cluster Program is a new undergraduate international program designed to combine the strengths of engineering-related fields at SJTU. Offering all major courses in English or French, the Cluster Program welcomes prospective students with an interest in engineering studies from all over the world.

 

The SJTU Undergraduate Engineering Cluster program in English includes:

-The University of Michigan-Shanghai Jiao Tong University (UM-SJTU) Joint Institute (JI)

-School of Materials Science and Engineering

-School of Electronic Information and Electrical Engineering

-School of  Ocean and Civil Engineering

-School of Mechanical Engineering

 

The Cluster Program covers various engineering-related disciplines such as:

-Mechanical Engineering

-Electrical and Computer Engineering

-Materials Science and Engineering

-Computer Science and Technology

-Information Engineering

-Automation

-Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering

-Power and Energy Engineering

-And more

 

Cluster students will take introductory engineering courses in the first 1.5 years at the UM-SJTU Joint Institute. After meeting this requirement, Cluster students may choose to continue their studies at the UM-SJTU Joint Institute or transfer to another engineering school (in English or Chinese) to complete their bachelor’s degree.

Reminder: Although all Cluster courses are taught in English, Cluster students are required to take Chinese culture and language courses while enrolling in their respective degree programs. All Cluster students are expected to meet HSK 4 (Chinese Language Test) as the minimal Chinese language requirement for graduation. Exceptions include Cluster students enrolling in the UM-SJTU Dual Degree Program, JI-KTH 3+2 Bachelor’s Program, or other international programs.

Application Prerequisites

1. High school diploma and above.

2. Non-Chinese citizens who hold a foreign passport and comply with the relevant regulations set by the “Document No. 12 (2020) of Ministry of Education of the PRC " and etc.

1. Test Scores

If you apply with either SAT (JI code: 6563) or ACT (JI code: 6983) test scores. Scores with writing test scores are preferred.


2024 First-year admitted class test scores of Middle 50th percentile ranges: 

SAT total score: 1350-1450

SAT Math: 730-790

ACT total score: 30-33

ACT Math: 28-35


If you apply with A-level scores, you need to apply with Math A or above. If you apply with International Baccalaureate (IB), you need to apply with Math HL 5 or above or SL 7 in Math or above. Predicted A-level or IB scores are NOT accepted. Students with valid college entrance exam scores, please contact the International Undergraduate Recruitment Office at ji-intadm@sjtu.edu.cn. (e.g., Malaysia UEC exam scores, Kazakhstan UNT scores. France National Exam scores, and etc.)

If you don’t have any exam scores mentioned above, you have an option to take the  SJTU International Undergraduate Entrance Exam in spring 2025 with other international students.


SJTU International Undergraduate Entrance Exam

The “SJTU International Undergraduate Entrance Exam” includes two parts: Written Test and Interview

Note: Applicants for Engineering Cluster program in English ONLY needs to attend the written tests and must complete application on https://apply.commonapp.org/Login?ma=699 first. Written Test Registration: Applicants should log in to the Study@SJTU online application system (https://apply.sjtu.edu.cn) to choose the undergraduate English-taught Program, fill in the application form, submit the electronic version of application materials and complete exam.

2. English language requirements

For non-native speakers of English, either TOEFL (iBT, JI code: 6210) or IELTS score is required.

TOEFL (iBT, including the Home Edition and Paper Edition): 90 or above; TOEFL Essentials: 10 or above.

IELTS: 6 or above

Exceptions: You may be exempted from providing any of these exams if your SAT Evidence-Based Reading and Writing score is 650 or above,  if both your ACT Reading and English scores are 27 or above, or if you have recently completed at least 4 years of rigorous academic study in any of the following countries: Anguilla, Antigua, Barbuda, Australia, Bahamas, Barbados, Bermuda, British Virgin Islands, Canada (except Quebec), Cayman Islands, Dominica, England, Federated, Northern Ireland, Scotland, Seychelles, Shetland Islands, St. Kitts-Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago, Turks and Caicos Islands, United States (other than Puerto Rico), US Virgin Islands, Wales, and Singapore. (Those in American Schools and British Schools abroad may also be exempted if at least 4 years of rigorous academic study have recently been completed and if test scores meet the above standards.)


3. Recommendation Letters

Two recommendation letters are required: one from your high school counselor and one from a core academic teacher.


4. High School Transcripts

We pay special attention to math, physics, chemistry and other related subjects. Please arrange to have official copies of your transcripts in English sent to us by all high schools you attended.


5.Other documents

5.1 Financial guarantee proven deposit of no less than RMB 100,000 (or equivalent in foreign currency).

5.2 The nationality or household registration certificate of both the applicant's parents (Passport or ID card).

5.3 Applicants should provide the following materials if one or both parents of the applicant are Chinese citizens ("Document No. 12 (2020) of Ministry of Education of the PRC". http://www.moe.gov.cn/srcsite/A20/moe_850/202006/t20200609_464159.html):

5.3.1 Certificate of the applicant obtained foreign nationality at birth or afterward.

5.3.2 The nationality or household registration certificate of both the applicant's parents (passport or ID card).

5.3.3 For applicants who obtained foreign nationality at birth, ① if one or both of the parents are Chinese citizens and have a permanent residence abroad, a certificate of the corresponding permanent residence needs to be provided; ②if one or both of the parents are Chinese citizens but have not obtained permanent residence abroad, certificate of the renunciation of the Chinese nationality of the applicant needs to be provided.

5.3.4 For applicants who were originally Chinese citizens and obtained foreign nationalities afterward, a certificate for the cancellation of their original registered residence in China and the renunciation of the Chinese nationality should be provided.

5.3.5 The entry and exit seal page of visiting China on the applicant's passport from April 30, 2021 to the time of application.

5.4 Applicants under 18 years old (until September 1, 2025) should provide a letter offered by the guardian in China.


Scholarships

Excellent applicants will have the opportunity to be awarded different kinds of scholarships, such as the Chinese Government Scholarship, Shanghai Government Scholarship, SJTU Scholarship, and others.


1. Students applying for CSC Scholarship(Chinese Government Scholarship)should directly contact the local Chinese Embassy or Consulate. For specific application times and requirements, please refer to the information published by the local Chinese embassy or consulate. When completing the scholarship application form, the applicant should select Shanghai Jiao Tong University as the priority.

The scholarship content is subject to the website of China Scholarship Council. As for accommodation, SJTU does not provide free dormitory, but provides accommodation subsidy (1,000 RMB/ Month).


2. Students applying for Shanghai Government Scholarship and SJTU Scholarship can click the option “Apply for scholarship” when completing SJTU’s online application form. The contents of the scholarship are as follows:

Fees

Application Fee:USD 75(nonrefundable)

Tuition: 120,000 RMB/ Academic Year

Insurance: 800 RMB/ Academic Year (The relevant regulations by the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China and the Management Regulations for International Student of SJTU require all international students with study duration over 6 months to purchase the Group Comprehensive Insurance in Mainland of China.)

Books and Supplies: 2,100 RMB

Note: The figure of estimated Fees represents average cost and is subject to change.


Admission

1. The admission decision will be based on a comprehensive evaluation. Applicants can check their admission results in the application system (https://apply.sjtu.edu.cn).

2. Applicants need to pre-pay the tuition fees in the application system (https://apply.sjtu.edu.cn) to confirm the enrollment within two weeks after admission results are released.

3. The "Admission Notice" will be issued gradually during July 2025.

4. All application materials and information provided by applicants must be authentic, accurate and fully complete. Otherwise, the applicant will be disqualified for application, enrollment or study.
