 I.     Introduction

 

        The pre-university training for international students provided by Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) is an international-student-oriented educational program, which aims to enhance international students’ language skills, academic performance and communication skills. Students in the pre-university program can make their choice according to their needs to establish a solid foundation for their future studies in undergraduate programs

 

This pre-university training plan includes THREE different programs:

Program A: This program is designed for students who have already reached a certain level of Chinese language proficiency but need remediation of other academic subjects. The goal is to enhance their Chinese language skill, foundation knowledge of majors, and cross-culture adaptive capability;

Program B: The target group is students who do not possess any Chinese language skills but have met the requirement of other academic courses of SJTU undergraduate admissions. The goal is to enhance their Chinese language skill and enable them to make great progress in language studies; 

Program C: This program is designed for students who have already reached a high level of Chinese language proficiency but need remediation of science subjects including mathematics, physics, chemistry and/or biology.

        International students, who have participated in SJTU’s pre-university programs achieved good grades in their academic courses and passed the SJTU entrance test will gain PRIORITY in undergraduate admissions of Shanghai Jiao Tong University.

 

II.     Eligibility Requirements

 

1.   Non-Chinese citizen who holds a valid foreign passport

2.   For applicants who originate from mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan and have immigrated to other countries, SJTU implements relevant administrative rules and regulations on international students issued by the Ministry of Education of the PRC

3.   Hold a senior high school (or above) diploma or equivalent and in good physical and mental health condition

 

III.    Class Schedule and Curriculum

 

Program A:

 

Objective

This pre-university program provided by SJTU is an international-student-oriented educational program, designed for students aiming to enhance their Chinese language skills, foundation knowledge of majors, and cross-cultural adaptive capability to meet the requirements of SJTU undergraduate admissions. Students in this pre-university program can make their choice based on their needs, to build a solid foundation for their future studies.

 

Syllabus

    The length of study will be one year. Registration will start in September. This program consists of two semesters. The total class hours (CHRs) of Program A is 1008, while each semester includes 504 CHR:

Evaluation Criteria

Students who pass the final evaluation of the Program A (academic performance in usual time, stage grade, final grade, etc.) can be enrolled in all LIBERAL ARTS undergraduate programs open to international students. The 2017 undergraduate programs of liberal arts are listed below:

Program B

Objective

This pre-university training program provided by SJTU is an international-student-oriented educational program, whose goal is to enhance their Chinese language skill for the group of international students who have already met the requirement of other academic courses except Chinese. The final goal is to help them to make great progress in Chinese study and reach the HSK level 5, in order to be well prepared for the undergraduate studies at SJTU.

 

Syllabus

    The length of study will be one year. Registration will start in September. This program consists of three semesters. The total class hours (CHRs) of Program B is 1056, while the 1st semester includes 468 CHRs, 2nd semester includes 468 CHRs and 3rd semester includes 120 CHRs:

Program C

Objective

This pre-university training program provided by SJTU is an international-student-oriented educational program, designed for students aiming to enhance their academic performance of science including mathematics, physics, chemistry and biology, in order to meet the requirements of SJTU undergraduate admissions of science majors.

 

Syllabus

        The length of study will be fourteen months. Registration will start in February. This program is composed of three semesters. The total class hours (CHRs) of Program C is 1260, while the 1st semester is 450, 2nd semester is 480, and 3rd semester is 330. The last two weeks of every semester are examination weeks:

Evaluation Criteria

 

Students who have passed the final evaluation of the Program C (academic performance in usual time, stage grade, final grade, etc.) can be enrolled in ALL undergraduate programs that are open to international students.

 

Upgrade Examination

Program C upgrade examination will be held in the middle of June each year. Students who have passed the examination will be given admissions to the SJTU undergraduate program. Students who have not passed the examination will continue their pre-university study. The organization of the examination will be arranged by the coordination between the International Student Center and the implementation school of pre-university programs.

 

Note: Based on students’ academic performance, all training plans of Program A, Program B and Program C are subject to change in order to meet students’ needs and goals.

 

IV.        Faculty

 

       Based on Shanghai Jiao Tong University’s advantage of teaching and research, the instructors of pre-university programs are elaborately selected from SJTU with integrity, international vision, academic excellence and sufficient teaching experience.

VI.        Application Documents and Fees

 

Application Documents

1.     Original senior high school diploma or equivalent (Graduating students should provide an official statement serving as proof of graduation; If admitted, students shall bring the original diploma and submit the photocopy for the verification purpose. Failure to submit required documents will result in the cancellation of student’s enrollment status)

2.     Official transcripts of the applicant’s high school study or equivalent, including courses taken

3.     1 photocopy of passport

 

Besides, applicants should submit the following documents if they are

4.     Program A candidate:

HSK examination score report (level 4 or above) or equivalent certificate

Program C candidate:

HSK examination score report (level 5 or above) or equivalent certificate

5.     Under 18 years old up to the registration day:

Guardian's Guarantee Statement

*The first two documents should be notarized by an authorized institution if they are in languages other than Chinese/English.

 

Application Fee (Non-refundable)

CNY 800 (approx. USD 120, can be paid online through the application website)

 

NOTE: Whether the applicant has been admitted or not, his or her application fee and documents shall not be returned.

 

VII.                Application Procedure

 

1.    Visit http://apply.sjtu.edu.cn, register a new account according to the instruction, then login to the online application system;

2.     Select the program you are eligible to apply, and then submit your online application;

3.     Pay the application fee of CNY 800 (The fee can be waived for current students in the language programs in the International Education Center, School of Humanities);

4.     Applicant who gets admitted by Shanghai Jiao Tong University will need to prepay certain amount of tuition, and makes a confirmation in the online application system. The applicant also needs to mail hard copies of their application materials to the degree affairs office;

5.     After the final review of the admitted student’s documents, SJTU international student center will issue the admission letter and visa application form (JW202) to the admitted student;

6.     Applicant should apply for appropriate type of visa and come to SJTU to register at the required location within time limit.

 

        *If a candidate for Program C has an excellent academic performance, he or she can apply to transfer to a higher grade or choose the enrollment semester.

 

VIII.                Application Deadline

 

Program A/B:           June 15, 2017

Program C:               January 10, 2017

 

IX.                Tuition

 

Program A    CNY 42,000

Program B    CNY 32,000

Program C    CNY 34,800

For transferred students of Program C,

First semester: CNY 15,000

Second semester: CNY 15,800

        Third semester: CNY 10,800

 

X.                Scholarship

 

The prerequisite of the pre-university scholarship is that the candidate has not been awarded any other types of scholarship simultaneously.

The pre-university scholarship will be awarded according to the transcripts that applicants submitted.

Full scholarship will be a full tuition waiver, while the half scholarship will be a half tuition waiver. For details, please contact the pre-university admission officer.

 

XI.                Additional

 

The minimum size of Program A/B is 10 students. If the number cannot be reached, class will be cancelled and application fee will be refunded.

The minimum size of Program C is 15 students. If the number cannot be reached, class will be cancelled and application fee will be refunded.

Shanghai Jiao Tong University reserves the right of interpretation of all pre-university-related policies.
