Application Guide for SJTU International Chinese
Language Teachers Scholarship 2025
To meet the
growing international demand for Chinese language teachers, facilitate Chinese
language education around the world, and support the professional development
of Chinese language teachers, the Center for Language Education and Cooperation
(CLEC) has established the International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship
(hereinafter referred to as the Scholarship) for eligible Chinese language
teachers outside of China. Confucius Institutes, independent Confucius
Classrooms, selected HSK test centers, foreign educational institutions,
Chinese language teacher training programs/Chinese departments at foreign
universities, professional associations for Chinese language teaching, Chinese
embassies (consulates) abroad (hereinafter collectively referred to as
Recommending Institutions) may recommend outstanding students and in-service
Chinese language teachers to further their studies in international Chinese
language education and related programs at Chinese universities.
Acting as one of the host institutions of the
scholarship recipients, SJTU warmly
welcome foreign applicants to join the Chinese language and culture programs at
SJTU. Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) is one of the famous institutions of
higher learning with the longest history and reputation at home and abroad.
After 129 years of unremitting efforts, Shanghai Jiao Tong University has
become a domestic first-class and internationally renowned university, and
further defined the vision on constructing a “comprehensive, innovative and
international” world-class university. Details of the scholarship application
are provided below.
1. ELIGIBILITY
a) Be a non-Chinese citizen;
b) Be friendly to China, have no criminal record, abide by the
laws and regulations of China and the rules and regulations of the university;
c)
Be in good
physical and mental health , be in good academic and behavioral standing;
d) Be interested in Chinese language education and related work;
and
e) Be aged between 16 and 35 years on September 1, 2025. The maximum
age limit for in-service Chinese teachers may be extended to 45, but those who
apply for a scholarship for a Bachelor’s degree shall be younger than 25 under
most circumstances.
2. SCHOLARSHIP TYPES AND QUALIFICATIONS
2.1 Scholarship
for Master’s Degree in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (MTCSOL)
The program commences in September 2025
and provides scholarship for a maximum of two academic years. Applicants shall hold
a Bachelor’s degree, and have a minimum score of 180 on the HSK Test (Level 6)
as well as 60 on the HSKK test
(Advanced Level). Priority will be given to applicants who may provide a work
contract with a teaching institution upon completing their studies in China or
a proof to the same effect.
2.2 Scholarship for Bachelor's
Degree in Chinese
The program commences in September 2025
and provides scholarship for a maximum of four academic years. Applicants shall
hold a senior high school diploma and a minimum score of 200 on the HSK Test
(Level 5) as well as 60 on the HSKK test
(Intermediate Level). At the same time, applicants shall also meet the requirement
mentioned at 5.6 of this document.
2.3 Scholarship for One-Academic-Year Study Program (Chinese Language
Study)
The program commences in September 2025 and provides scholarship for a maximum of 11 months.
Applicants shall have a minimum score of 210 on the HSK test (Level 3), and
priority will be given to applicants who provide an HSKK test score.
2.4 Scholarship
for One-Semester Study Program (Chinese Language and Literature)
The program commences in September 2025
or March 2026, and provides scholarship for a maximum of 5 months. Applicants
shall have a minimum score of 180 on the HSK Test (Level 3), and an HSKK test
score is required.
3. SCHOLARSHIP COVERAGE, CRITERIA AND APPRAISAL
3.1 The
Scholarship supports tuition,
accommodation, living allowance and comprehensive medical insurance.
3.2 Accommodation allowance for students of Bachelor’s Degree program, One Semester program and
One-Academic-Year program is 1000 CNY per person/month (inclusive of 700 CNY
sponsored by CLEC); while the accommodation allowance for students of MTCSOL is 1200 CNY per person/month (inclusive of
700 CNY sponsored by CLEC). Students could choose to live on campus or off
campus. Due to the limited number of university dormitories, students who
prefer to live on campus are required to book dormitory online in advance and
follow the booking procedures to pay the accommodation fees according to the
type and charge standard of the dormitory.
3.3 Living
allowance is granted by SJTU on a monthly basis.
The monthly living allowance for students of Bachelor’s Degree program, one-academic-year
program and one-semester program is 2,500 CNY per person;while the monthly living
allowance for students of MTCSOL is 3,000 CNY per person.
Students must register every semester. Students
registered before the 15th (inclusive) of the month are entitled to the full
allowance of that month, while those who are registered after the 15th are
entitled to half of the amount. If a student leaves China for more than 15 days
for personal reasons during the study period (excluding summer and winter
vacations), the living allowance during the period of absence from China will
be suspended. If a
student is suspended or withdrawn from school for personal reasons or is
subject to disciplinary action by SJTU, the living allowance from the date of
suspension, withdrawal, or notification of disciplinary action will be
suspended. The living allowance for graduating students is paid until half a
month after the graduation (or program completion) date set by SJTU.
3.4 Comprehensive
medical insurance is implemented
in accordance with relevant regulations of studying in China stipulated by the
Ministry of Education of China. Insurance fee per person is 400 CNY for
one-semester programe students, and 800 CNY per year for students engaged in
program longer than one academic year.
3.5 Degree students
are subject to the annual assessment. Only those who achieve Exellent in academic performance and Chinese language
proficiency are entitled to a full scholarship in the following academic year;
those who achieve Good are entitled to partial scholarships; In any other
cases, the scholarship will be suspended. Partial scholarships consist of
tuition fee, accommodation fee and comprehensive medical insurance.
4. APPLICATION AND ADMISSION PROCEDURES
4.1 Online registration will be available from February 20, 2025, on
the International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship application website (http://www.chinese.cn).
Please log on to search for recommending institutions and Shanghai Jiao Tong
University; upload application materials online; and track the application
progress, comments and results. (Students who apply for
MTCSOL should make a second application at Study@SJTU website: http://isc.sjtu.edu.cn/ together with the International
Chinese Teachers Scholarship Application Form as a proof for the required
registration payment; and students who apply for One-Academic-Year\one semester
study programs should also complete the SJTU Abroad Students Nomination process
upon receipt of the SJTU nomination links ).
*Note:
Applicants who apply to
study at SJTU should choose SJTU as their first choice of host institution. And the application deadlines are
a) May 15, 2025, for programs starting in September 2025;
b) October 31, 2025, for programs starting in March 2026;
The CLEC will entrust an expert panel to review the applications.
Decisions will be made based on HSK and HSKK scores and levels, and in
consideration of country distribution as well as other factors. The results
will be published about three months before school starts.
4.2 In-service Chinese language teachers need to provide proof of employment
and a letter of recommendation from the employer, priority will be given to them under equal conditions.
4.3 Applicants who have received the International Chinese Language Teachers
Scholarship Certificate during Chinese Bridge competitions may submit their
application documents along with their scholarship certificates to the Host
Institutions directly at the International Chinese Language Teachers
Scholarship website.For any further inquiries, please contact chinesebridge@chinese.cn.
4.4 After confirming with the scholarship recipients, SJTU will send out the Letter of Admission, Visa Application Form for Foreigners to
Study in China (JW202 Form), and other relevant documents to the personal e-mail
address of the scholarship recipients within 15 working days. Scholarship recipients
shall register at SJTU on the designated date as per the letter of admission..
5. APPLICATION DOCUMENTS
5.1 A scanned copy of passport photo page. Applicants under the age of 18
must submit a letter of attestation signed by the legal guardian in China;
5.2 A scanned copy of score reports of the HSK and HSKK tests (within the
two-year validity);
5.3 A recommendation letter signed by the head of the recommending
institution (with an objective evaluation of applicant and indicating whether
or not a Confucius Institute student; in-service Chinese language teachers
shall provide proof of employment and a reference letter from the employer);
5.4 Applicants for degree programs are required to provide a certificate of
the highest diploma (or proof of expected graduation) and an official
transcript;
5.5
Applicants for MTCSOL are
required to provide 2 reference letters from professors or
associate professors. Priority will be given to applicants who may provide an
employment contract with a teaching institution upon completing their studies
in China.
5.6 Applicants for Bachelor’s Degree in Chinese (International Chinese Language
Education) shall also obtain the pre admission to SJTU. (For details, see 7.

If the
materials are not in Chinese or English, notarized supporting documents must be
provided.
Applicants
shall submit other additional documents at the request of SJTU.
6. MISCELLANEOUS
6.1
In principle, applicants who have
received a similar scholarship within three years are not eligible for the
One-Semester Study Program or One-Year Study Program.
6.2
Incomplete or inadequate applications
will not be processed.
6.3
Application shall be terminated if the
related materials are found to be fraudulent or filled and submitted by someone
other than the applicant.
6.4
Students who cannot register in SJTU on
the scheduled time should write to SJTU stating the fact and reasons 15 days prior
to the admission date. Those who fail to register without a valid cause shall
have their scholarship revoked.
6.5
Students who fail to pass the
pre-enrollment medical examination, withdraw from school before completing the
program, fail to register at the university without prior permission, or
suspend their studies will be disqualified for the scholarship.
6.6
Degree students are subject to the
annual assessment according to the Annual
Appraisal Procedures of International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship.
