SJTU Listed Top 70 in 2015 QS World University Rankings
September 15, 2015 marks the release of the newest edition of the QS World University Rankings, Shanghai Jiao Tong Universitywas listed Top 70 in QS World University Rankings with 7 subjects ranking World Top 50 and 18 subjects ranking World Top 100. In order to better reflect the characteristics of various subjects, the QS ranking indicators this year were balanced for weight adjustment. After extensive consultation with expert opinion, QS did standardization process to the indicator "Citations per faculty" and each five fields of subjects takes up 20 percent in comprehensive performance. The improvement of Shanghai Jiaotong University further reflects the coordination of different subjects with "comprehensive, research-based and international" school policy.
The primary aim of the QS World University Rankings is to help students make informed comparisons of leading universities around the world. Based on six performance indicators, the rankings are designed to assess universities in four areas: research, teaching, employability and internationalization. Each of the six performance indicators carries a different weighting when calculating the overall scores with academic reputation (40%), employer reputation (10%), student-to-faculty ratio (20%), citations per faculty (20%), international faculty ratio (5%) and international student ratio (5%). For the 2015/16 edition, the rankings for Academic reputation draw on just under 76,800 responses from academics worldwide. The employer reputation indicator is also based on a global survey, taking in more than 44,200 responses for the 2015/16 edition.
SJTU had improved gradually in QS World University Rankings and this year marks the first time that SJTU was listed as World Top 100, moving up by 34 positions to the 70th. In the 2015 QS World University rankings, SJTU ranked third in the country with seven subjects of Shanghai Jiaotong University ranking among the world's top 50 and 18 subjects ranking the world's top 100 with 25 subjects entering the 200. The top 50 subjects are art and design, civil and structural engineering, machinery, aerospace and manufacturing engineering, materials science, electrical and electronic engineering, construction, and statistics. The series of all kinds of progress in QS World University Rankings of Shanghai Jiaotong University fully reflects improvement of academic ability and academic reputation in recent years which consolidate the foundation for SJTU's completion of a comprehensive world-class university in near future.
