Notice on the Application of 2017 Excellent International Student Award, SJTU
To all Colleges (Departments), and all international students:
In order to motivate international students, and further attract outstanding international students, our university decides to set up the "SJTU Excellent International Student Award" (called Excellent International Students and Student Cadres, SJTU before). According to the actual situation of our university, all colleges(departments) shall hold a fair, just and open candidate selection, review and recommendation. The university will organize an independent expert evaluation panel to evaluate applicants. Specific procedures are notified as follows:
I. Eligibility and Award Details
1. Eligibility: Full-time undergraduate and graduate international students.
2. Award Categories: The Awards divided into grand prize, first prize, second prize and third prize. In particular, the grand prize for the "Excellent International Students Award” is reviewed by China Scholarship Council (CSC), and candidates will be selected and recommended from the first prize recipients depending on the CSC evaluation criteria on “Excellent International Student Scholarship”. If the recommendation is approved, the candidate will only be granted the CSC scholarship, and will gain both the certificate of “CSC Excellent International Student Scholarship” and the certificate of “The Grand Prize for SJTU Excellent International Student Award”.
3. Award Details: The award recipients will earn certificates and one-off scholarship granted by SJTU. Particularly, the scholarship of the grand prize will be from the special fund of CSC “Excellent International Student Scholarship,” and the scholarship criteria is determined by CSC: one-off scholarship of 15,000 RMB per undergraduate recipient and one-off scholarship of 30,000 RMB per graduate recipient. Any change is subject to latest notices of CSC. The scholarship of the first prize, second prize and third prize are granted from the special donor fund by Shanghai Zimo International Cultural Communication Co., Ltd., with 5000 RMB for first prize recipients, 3000 RMB for second prize, and 1500 RMB for third prize. Our university will also consider inviting student representatives from award recipients to participate in “Sensing China” and other social practice and cultural activities.
4. Award Quota: The student number set for “SJTU Excellent International Award” is based on the principle that it shall account for 3 % of international students of full-time degree. There are 73 awards to be granted in 2017, with 49 for undergraduates and 24 for graduates.
Note: The review of 2017 CSC “Excellent International Student Scholarship” is subject to a formal notification the university is going to receive. The university will then organize unified standard of evaluation by the expert evaluation panel and recommend candidates on a selective basis. The result is expected to be announced by CSC in late November, 2017. The university will grant scholarship after receiving the official notification of CSC.

Other materials: papers published during the study in SJTU, copies of certifications and any materials regarding your achievements.
2. Graduates
(1) Application Requirements

Excellent academic performance, sound academic progress and outstanding research achievements
Actively involved in voluntary work, social practice and cultural activities; Outstanding achievements or contributions is preferred

Note: The applicant should be the first author or the second author after his supervisor. Conference paper should be marked.
Note: Copies of the cover, the table of contents, and the first page with the signature of the supervisor should be provided.

III. Selection Process and Deadline
We adopt the principle and procedure of "personal application, departments recommendation, expert evaluation, on-site defense, award name list announcement" to determine the award recipients.
1. Personal Application: The applicants are supposed to submit application materials to the relevant department BEFORE 16:00, April 5th. Undergraduate students should submit application materials to the Office of Undergraduate Education or teachers in charge of overseas students. Postgraduate students should put the application form into an envelope and sealed with signature after obtaining supervisor’ comments and signing and then submit relevant materials to the Office of Postgraduate Education.
2. Departments Recommendation: Each department can arrange internal review and complete the nomination for “Excellent International Student Award”. We will adjust the applicant number of each department depending on different factors. Details can be checked on “The Allocated Applicant Number of ‘Outstanding Overseas Students’ Scholarship of Shanghai Jiao Tong University in 2017” (attachment 3). After judging and collecting all the materials, departments should submit materials BEFORE 17:00 on April 21st along with “The Summary Sheet of Department Recommended Rank of ‘Outstanding Overseas Students’ Scholarship of Shanghai Jiao Tong University in 2017”.Delayed submitting will be considered as a renouncement. The submission office for undergraduate students is the Student Development Center (New Administration Building B807 on Minhang Campus and General Office 208 on Xuhui Campus) and for postgraduate students is Graduate School International Office (Room 331, Chen Ruiqiu Building).
3. Expert Evaluation: The evaluation is conducted in two rounds. The first round is reviewed by the expert evaluation panel. Applicants for first, second and third prizes are selected through the material review. The first prize applicants will be examined on the scene in the second round. The second review is conducted by secret ballot.
4. On-site Interview: First prize candidates should participate in the face-to-face interview. The grand prize and first prize recipients are interviewed by the expert evaluation panel. Candidates need to prepare a 5-minute PPT report. The time and venue of on-site interview are available on this website. An absence of on-site interview is regarded as a renouncement.
5. Award Name list Announcement: The name list of award recipients will be published on this website.
